hmm
Now... I'm all about women in positions of high power, and to have a woman in the white house would be outstanding. But did John McCain choose a woman for his VP candidate because she's the best woman for the job? Or because it's a political move to pull Hillary Clinton supporters to his side. Are we really seeing women, men, black men, etc as equals if we're voting based on the candidate who is most like ourselves? (ie. women voting for women not because of their stance but their gender, etc.)
Anyway... I was reading news articles online and found this which made me pause and go hmm.
"Elected in 2006 as the youngest and first female governor of Alaska in 2006, Palin has cleaned house in her own state by ridding it of corrupt politicians and taking on big oil interests. She is known to oppose same-sex marriage and abortion and to favour capital punishment." (CTV.ca)
What I want to know is - how can someone oppose abortion but support capital punishment? I get the obvious argument, unborn babies haven't done anything wrong and can't choose for themselves while criminals on death row have committed a crime, like killing another human being, which means they "deserve" to be there. I have a serious problem with that. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. No one deserves that kind of treatment. No one.

Why the assumption that Palin was chosen JUST because she is female?

I didn't say that I assume she was. Just raised the question. And even if John McCain DID choose her for other reasons, will voters be smart enough to look beyond the fact that she's a woman and vote for/against her based on her views on the issues? Or will they be so wrapped up in the fact that she's a woman, a mother with a baby, about to be a grandmother, etc? I think there's the same potential problem with Obama. Will people vote for him because they think he's the best candidate, or because he's black? And will people vote for McCain because they think he's the best candidate or because they don't want to see a black man in the White House? This election just raises alot of questions of race and gender and makes me think even more about how far we as a nation still have to go for equality of ALL people. AND the never ending question of are Americans really voting for candidates, or are we getting so caught up in the political attacks, partisan agendas, and showmanship (or womanship) of the whole campaign mess? Sometimes politics make me feel exhausted...

Politics... scrap that!
Did you see Palin's speech last night?
Did you see the video about McCain's life & his speech tonight? I do not know if there is another person today who possesses that depth of patriotism. Whatever selfish or unselfish hopes individuals have for the future- the inspiration of McCain's love for America is undeniable.

I have to agree with Lo's perspective about McCain's patriotism. It caught me offguard when I watched it.

Why is it that one's patriotism is judged by the amount of sacrifice a person has made in his or her life? Why do we need to make patriotism a contest? Do I think John McCain is patriotic? Yes. Do I think Barack Obama is equally patriotic? Yes. Is McCain MORE patriotic because he fought in a war and was tortured and held as a POW? I don't know. But I think that is asking the wrong question.
And yes. Palin WAS chosen just because she is a woman. McCain is trying to show voters that he is "hip" and "with it." However, by choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate, he has effectively slapped feminism and women EVERYWHERE incredibly hard in the face. She is a feminists worst dream- an anti-choice, former beauty queen with absolutely NO credentials... oh, except a history of corruption. But hey, that's the Republican party for you.

Kyle- WHAT? Are you serious? With what authority are you claiming this "slapping women everywhere"?
I could not be more proud to see a strong woman who has eliminated corruption stand up for the lives of innocent babies.
Choice... every woman has a choice. It comes 9 months BEFORE a child is born.
Regarding patriotism- either there is evidence of it in action or merely speculation. The evidence of McCain's patriotism is obvious. How about Obama's?

Was that a closed minded perspective?.... All Obama knows is corruption. He comes from the most corrupt city in the country and the most corrupt state in the union and some of his personal friends & close business partners are now serving time for corruption. But he still has the tenacity to air drop 60 laywers into Alaska to start fabricating issues on Palin b/c she took the wind out of his sails. Or is the smear campaign because she is a woman? Who is the true sexist? Who should the feminists really be up in arms about? The right sees who the candidate is and what that candidate stands for - sounds fair. The left, & you bring up her looks and the fact that she is a woman. On which side does the sexism really exist? You stated the feminists are up in arms. Palin sits on the other side of the aisle and does not share their agenda - period. Logically, if feminists were really about equality for women they would be celebrating, but in the PC world they helped create, anyone not sharing their agenda is anti feminism. How convenient. Picked b/c she is a woman, insane! But it is PC for the left to question her being picked due to gender. If Condi Rice had the Republican nomination you could then also state that it's a slap in the face of blacks. Are you questioning Obama being the nominee b/c he is black?
The Republicans find it hard to understand anyone who actually sees gender or race as job qualifications.
"Life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness" - we see this as patriotism, opportunity, competition, respect for all life - but hey, that's the Republican party for you.
